You did not say if the place he is working is union or open shop. I will assume open shop. This is what I know there is national shortage of skilled trades people. Generally speaking there is quite a boom currently for all trades both union and open shop. Everyone is trying to find good workers. It sounds like your grandson is young so he would likely start as an apprentice. In some cases those with extensive experience and proficiency are taken as a journeyman that is kind of a rare occurrence. If he got into the union he would work for a contractor and go to class. In a construction/trade union your employer is signatory a contractor not the union. The union trains you, negotiates the contract you work by ( wages, benefits, conditions, etc) and represents if there is a problem on the job. There are people that work for the same contractor from one job to the next that are union. Others that take a job call work till the work gets caught up get laid off and go to the next contractor. Generally in construction the union has better pay and benefits. If work is slow in one area you can boom out as they call it to a different area. The down side is you may not like some of the policies and most likely as a apprentice there will be some form of hazing ( punked/picked on by more experienced hands). Hopefully this helps. If you ask more questions I will try to answer.
