| I attended a late scheduled graduation party recently. I crossed paths with a young guy (not the graduate) and decided to strike up a conversation with him. I try to do this because I remember adults taking the time to converse with me when I was that age when most would just ignore the "dumb kid" and I appreciated the effort some guys would make.
This kid was about 16 years old. Lives in the country but not a farm kid. We were talking about a couple of different topics when he decided to start telling me about all of the mental issues he has been diagnosed with this summer. ADHD, autism, PTSD, despression, and then tells me he is on Adderall. Ok, not a big deal really, kind of felt sorry for him, but the odd thing was that he almost seemed proud of it. I was somewhat taken aback that he rattled these things off like they were war metals that he managed to achieve.
I don't know if this was just a "him" thing or if this is common among that generation, but it was most certainly strange to me! I hope he wasn't wishing for a high five 'cause he didn't get one. On the way home I then began to wonder if he will remember me for life as the a-hole that didn't share in his enthusiasm! | |
