SOIL | As others said, see if their is a suggested laptop.
When I was in college, most students used MacBooks, and according to them, that was the only way to get the job done. Macs made their work look better. But somehow, I got a better grade than many of them and I just used an $800 Windows 7 Dell Laptop from Best Buy. I even looked to see which of the three stores in the area had the least sales tax.
That being said, I would go ahead and spend the money on Microsoft Office rather than the free LibreOffice for school. And don't buy a refurbished laptop, rarely had good luck with those.
