You can do some simple checks with an ohm meter to make sure the stator windings aren’t shorted to the frame or open. Have to be careful with insulation testers that put a high voltage on the windings. That can fry voltage regulators etc. Safest is to disconnect the exciter and regulator before testing the stator windings if you want to use an insulation tester.
It may be worthwhile flashing the wires with a low voltage like 12 volts or even 6 volts with the generator spinning at full rated rpm. You may get some AC output and can check the line to neutral voltage (120??) on each line and compare to line to line voltage (240??) If you get the normal 1:2 ratio of voltage while supplying power to the field or exciter, you have a pretty good indication the stator and field are good, you just need the exciter or regulator.
It’s worthwhile to test for “residual” voltage by just spinning the generator up to rated rpm. You may get a low voltage output that can be used to evaluate the health of the stator the same as flashing it with a battery. The residual is from magnetic field strength left in the iron from the last time it was run. Many/most generators use the residual to build up voltage. If it’s too low or gone entirely, it must be restored by flashing the field before the generator will build up. | |
