Michigan | I dug into the top end of my dryer this afternoon. Just in case anyone in the future comes across this post:
These dryers are designed to load from either the front or the rear. Here's what has to be done:
1) Move the paddle switch. The holes for the paddle switch are pre-cut in both locations and it's easy to move it from one end to the other.
2) Move the fill hole from one end to the other. This is easy, there is a cover plate without a hole at one end of the dryer and a cover plate with the fill hole in the other end. They can be swapped from end to end.
3) Auger is the hardest part. The auger can't have flighting where it runs through the paddle switch paddle. So, if the dryer is set up to fill at the front like mine is, the flighting at the rear of the auger is cut away so it doesn't interfere with the paddle switch. If you just reverse the motor and try to fill from the rear there will be no flighting where the grain enters the dryer and I think this will cause problems with plugging and put excess stress on everything. So, the auger either needs to be swapped end for end, or a piece of flighting welded onto the rear. At the same time, when moving the paddle switch to the front the flighting there will need to be removed so it doesn't hit.
I think I may just end up reflighting my entire auger since I've got it all tore apart, that way it will be good for a very long time.
