Subject: RE: John Deere 8100 won’t shift past 13th gear

West Central Iowa
We work on a lot of these 8000 series Deere's. I fact we have an 8410 transmission torn down for similar symptoms with PCU14, PCU16 and PCU31 codes. The first thing we would check with these error codes would be to remove the lower battery and inspect the inching (clutch) pedal arm at the transmission for full range of motion from stop pin to stop pin. We have seen a broken spring, corn stalks, dirt/mud build up, sticks branches and a bad clutch cable limiting travel of this arm. In extreme high hour cases we have seen some internal inching valve linkage wear cause similar problems, but these were generally in hi hour, loader applications. After checking the clutch arm, if all looked good there, we would do pressure tests (lube & system pressure) to determined if there was an internal leak in any of the clutch packs.

At PCU 11 address you can watch clutch engaged switch status, 000 is open or clutch pedal down. 001 is closed,or clutch pedal up.

Also, there is a PCU address that you can use to apply the clutch packs one individual clutch pack at a time to check for leakage, but I am not sure if it is available on very early SN 8X00 tractors software versions.

In our case on this 8410 the pressure tests showed a leak in DC clutch.

We always like to do a calibration before we tear these transmissions down as a calibration may alert you to a problem that could possibly be missed otherwise. This 8410 the DC clutch filled too slow and set a code due to the blown piston seal. Also C1 & C4 clutch filled to fast and set a code due to material worn off the clutch piston allowing the piston return bellevue springs to lose most of their tension.
