If you are going get a small gas unit be sure you do not buy one that does not have an SAE engine mount. Since we are a Briggs dealer and also a Mecc Alte dealer I will comment as follows: Briggs engines always have an SAE mount and that mount changes according to engine size. As I recall there are only two common SAE generator shafts the J609A 3/4 in taper and the J609B 7/8 in taper and the common European is the B9/C23 and C30 which are 23 mm and 30mm taper. These are commmon replacement ends esp the SAE in the US.
None of the cheap Chinese generators that I have looked at have an SAE alternator on the engine. And the common way to tell (kinda) is if the alternator looks like it is part of the engine crankcase then that is non SAE and no replacement alternators available. Same thing with the Chinese 6kw single cylinder diesels ( and we had a bunch of new ones at one time) there are no replacement ends for these. (And they are not a bad unit just no gen ends available)
Everything I have seen at the big box stores has been non SAE. DeWalt and all the rest are non SAE and junk. We have a a Generac 5500EXL with a bad generator end and it is SAE and has a Generac Chinese electric start engine but owner left it here as he did not want to spent $250 for a new end.
We had a small Rigid generator (big box stuff) in for repair that was nearly new and had a bad generator end and non SAE. The windings were aluminum.
The HFT were non SAE at one time and I looked at them recently and at least some looked SAE but I could not tell about the shaft sizing.
We do not like to work on small sets as there is no money in them but we try to help people. We work on diesel from 20kw to 1000kw all the time. The guys just installed a 560kw on a Doosan in a cabinet and a lot of frame work in there. | |
