We service and sell all kinds of generators. But in the past and perhaps currently the vast majority of PTO including the WinCo, Grainger etc did not have an exciter which a normal generator set has. The voltage regulation consisted of a transformer, reactor and a rectifier bridge arrangement. Sometimes some of the units would lose their magnetic field and would need to be flashed and some have terminals just for that purpose. And these units are somewhat problematic as farmers bring them to us frequently. We have converted some to a voltage regulator with limited success but they would still not maintain their magnetic field if not used for a period of time.
If I were going to purchase a new unit I would buy either a Mecc Alte or Marathon as we are dealers for both. And there may be other manufacturers. Mecc Alte is less cost normally. One negative of the Mecc Alte is that it does not use a NEMA or IEC wiring connection but once it is wired that is not important.
Both Mecc Alte and Marathon only furnish the generator and the gear box. So they require the cart, shaft and metering , breaker etc. But the are both stanard generator ends with an exciter and automatic voltage regulator and that makes a significant difference IMO. In the past we have built Mecc Alte up to 175kw but the gear box is rated 130kw. For dairies now we are installing 500kw and 700kw so PTO demand has faded. | |
