Those are awesome tonnages. The oatlage we gad was great too, chopped about 300 acres. Milborn has been good to work with for us. SD Ranger may be a variety to look into for next year if you want an oat that can be grain or forage. Replaces SD Rushmore and supposed to stand better.
The farmer owners of the mill will be our primary source of raw oats for the initial 4M bushels annually needed. We are putting together the flow sheets and architectural for a twin “B” mill next to the mill. This will take an additional 4M bushels that may require pulling some oats from other farmers. Won’t get the premium price of an investors but still will be a solid price.
How is SD ranger for drought tolerance? I think the Goliath are pretty good in low moisture situations but gettting them to stand until harvest in our South Dakota winds is basically impossible, but we were really really dry to start and then caught a couple big rains, still shocked they ton’d up as much as they did. They laid over but I think the other hybrid helped hold them off the ground so we could actually pick them up still
What is the mill price per bushel this year?? What are you guys that have ownership in the mill doing for a crop rotation? Are oats gonna be in the rotation all the time now? I always thought a corn, corn, beans, oats/cc and then Back to corn would be a great rotation |
