SE ND | I was asked to help AI some cows for some neighbors on the 3rd of July, although it was hot and humid, the breeding went well. We bred roughly 100 cows in 90 minutes, me and another neighbor breeding, and extra help bringing up cows and loading guns.
I try to keep myself as clean as possible, although cows on grass get pretty loose so you end up wearing a little. I bring a small cooler with clean water to rise hands and equipment off as we breed. A few days later I thought I had developed heat rash from sweating inside the breeder sleeve.
It progressed to my fingers and my non-sleeve arm, it took me a few days to put two and two together so I checked with the other neighbor who helped breed and his left arm had a rash too. We were breeding in an area with known poison ivy. So I thought I had just brushed against cows who had walked through or bedded down in a patch of it.
Well, in talking with my landlady who is both a veterinarian and an emergency room doctor, she said I got it from the manure. When the cows eat the leaves they concentrate the oil and anywhere I got manure on me, even with rinsing the manure off promptly, I have a good dose of blisters and rash. My left arm arm and abdomen are the worst and apparently the oil permeated through the breeder sleeves.
The thought never even crossed my mind while we were breeding, as I didn't help herd them into the corrals so it wasn't like I was walking through the stuff. This is my second case in three years and the first case I wasn't aware we even had poison ivy around, and was basically crawling in a patch of it while fencing. We have Western Poison Ivy here which looks like a small tree or shrub.
Just some food for thought when you're out ultrasounding, preg checking, breeding, etc.
