A lot of guys run a 12 row head, modern combine, grain cart, 3 to 5 semis running ( depending on distance) averaging 40-to 45 loads a day and some days more. Start harvesting with less loss at 22-25% moisture ( yes and saving some phantom yield loss, see it every year) compared to waiting for truck to dump at a elevator between 1-1/2 to 2 hrs? That is 5-6 loads a day compared to 10-15. Most e plants close at 4 in the afternoon. What do you do with a combine and help while everybody sitting around waiting for a truck? Drying costs if drying in warmer weather less than a 1/2 the cost , I would say in 80 degree weather if you can catch some, 1/3 the cost. 2.50 is today’s cost, have to avg in some older bins that got paid for along time ago. Some bins in our area that government paid storage on in 80’s that were paid for in three years. Also have ability to blend grain, under dry some early and blend it in with over dry at the end. So that is a big plus. Now avg in the basis and carry and while not a home run every year, this year corn because of big crop we still made interest, soybeans were a homerun. You also have your crop in your bin and not giving the market the grain while you decide to sell it.
