As the chain moves around the sprockets, the pins and bushings inside each link rub against each other. Without oil, this friction causes rapid wear, leading to what is commonly known as chain "stretch".
haven't oiled a chain on a baler in 15 years probably. Seems to operate just fine without putting oil on them. All I can tell that oil gains is collecting trash and junk on the chains.

I quit oiling baler chains at least 15 years ago too,maybe 20
