Q and U on beans and U on corn are “commercial months”. That is the trade is dominated by commercials jockeying for bushels to make it to new crop. So one day they can act like old crop and the next they can be like new crop. Spreads can be unpredictable and are hard to trade. So any speculator is playing with fire. Additionally there just are not the physical bushels that need to utilize futures to lay off risk. So the volume discrepancy is more just the nuance of contract months that any real fundamental reason.
