If you are taking 90 across, I recommend cutting through Belle Fouche and taking 212. It is a few miles closer and a nice drive.
Things I have liked include where Custers last stand was. I also enjoyed MT Rushmore and where they are working on the Indian.
The 1812 Pioneer village also made a nice stop.
DO NOT STOP at Wall drug. Those places sell online now and my wife keeps buying crap she saw there.
In all fairness, she doesn't' think it's crap, and the price sure doesn't' either.
