Subject: RE: Duluth to the Soo

Iowa
I've been there a couple times, but not recently. Things could have changed since then. It was a beautiful area in general. Some of what I remember includes:

The towns of Lutsen and Grand Mariais were nice tourist towns. I rented a sea kayak in Lutsen and rode large waves on Lake Superior, probably as close as I will ever get to surfing. There is a ski resort near Lutsen with the cable cars that offer great views of the area year round.

Superior National Forest is a short drive west of Grand Marias. There are cabins to rent in the area and lots of camp sites around small lakes & streams that offer good fishing. You might want to bring some bear spray along, and don't leave your food sitting around..

The highway going north from Duluth along Lake Superior has lots of great views with waterfalls and light houses. The traffic is a little slow with the two lane road and few opportunities to pass. Just be patient and enjoy the views.

A boat tour out of Duluth on Lake Superior is well worth the time to get a good history lesson of the area and to get a close look at the size of the ships going in and out of there.
