I saw the Wise Bros on the building.  Decided to go to your website, and started reading....

I read that two brothers started gas stations, one on the south side of the road, one on the north side of the road.

"John Wise's other son Owen Wise moved his family to a new house on the north side of the road in May, 1931. At that time, Owen started another gas station on the north side of the highway. He sold Shell products and later Texaco."

Were these two gas stations directly across the road from each other?

Just curious.

Hi Martin,

Yes, they faced each other across the new 2 lane Highway 40. Great Uncle Lowell built the first one in 1927 in the summer between his junior and senior year of high school. A few years went by, and his older brother Owen lost everything feeding cattle in the great depression in 1931. So he opened a second station with his brother on the opposite side of the road. We found the original blue print where they got permission from the Highway Department to push a 2 inch "water line" under the road to connect both stations. But they actually used the line to connect both sets of bulk tanks behind each station! Which ever company had cheaper fuel, they would use them to fill up their tanks, which would also fill the tanks across the highway! They ran two stations until 1963 when Interstate 70 came through and tore down one station, and left the other one too far from an exit. It closed a year later but is still there to the west of our main building. I keep my "goodies" in there....
