If you do have a small hoard, you are probably going to get hit over the head by somebody that wants it all. .
that may be, well, lets just say, difficult for them
as far as shaving some off, well, yes, if you look at some of the video's where people were in "bad" situations and used gold, that is exactly what they did (although to be fair, most had silver also for smaller purchases).
There are multiple multiple videos from people who lived through war in countries where they actually did utilize gold in those situations.
People always look at gold as a "well I don't want everything all tied up in gold"

no more than you have a Snap On toolbox filled entirely with 1/2inch sockets and nothing else
may want to have a few other sizes and screwdrivers and ratchets and so forth
same with gold
it is actually a really easy concept which people overly complicate because they simply don't want to buy any
and yeah, it really is that simple, most arguments are based on the one premise which is "I don't want any so I am going to make up all these weird scenarios to show and support why I don't want any"
Don't want any, fine by me, no skin of my back
Don't want a good assault rifle, again, no skin of my back, that is your choice
Don't want any bonds, fine by me
Don't want any stocks, fine by me
never understood why people feel the need to convince me that I shouldn't do something with my money when it doesn't affect them
Just like me not choosing to use crop insurance and instead putting that premium away in a separate account every year, you don't want to do that, again, fine by me
