Just about everything thing we purchase from a screwdriver to an automobile is up 50% since then. The question should be why haven't commodity prices seen the same inflation?
because screwdriver and automobile production is throttled to meet demand, farmers go out and overproduce every chance they get because that is the most profitable thing for them to do with their business assets and most don't value inventory carrying costs. Oversupply the screwdriver and automobile inventory and their accountants will be screaming at the inventory manager to get rid of product as it costs them every day they hold it, if they dump the product at a loss, the company can't pay its bills and goes out of business. Farmers sell at a loss and get welfare checks from the government to encourage the behavior, so markets have abundant product at or below breakeven costs. |
