Why are so many acres getting hit year after year with disease? Why are so many acres susceptible?

So many acres get hit because we raise corn next to corn. Broad swaths of hosts next to each other allow the easy vectoring of diseases. When half the date of Iowa is corn every year once a disease gets there it spreads readily.

Second nearly all the corn varieties we raise today are related and are very few generations removed from the handful of starting inbreds.

That is literally part of the disease triangle the universities have been preaching at us all for the last 65 years. "Modern" agronomy has been trying to warn us for generations that this was coming. We didn't listen so now we need to use new tools to to keep doing the same thing we did before the disease came.
