Central Nebraska | I'm not going to tell you how to raise your child but I'll tell you my story.
My wife and I have often said our biggest parenting fail was allowing our 8 year old son to have an iPad. He became addicted to it......mostly because we didn't not police it enough. We eventually learned it was a great motivator for him and we often used it as punishment. He played games on it but we had to approve which ones he could play. But he also used it to learn. And learn he did! This fall he will begin his second year and the University of Nebraska - Lincoln where he is in the Raike's School of Computer Science and Management. I call it an honor's program for honor's students. He is majoring in computer science, accounting, and finance and this summer he is doing an internship with Kiewit in Omaha. Maybe the iPad wasn't so bad.......maybe we didn't parent well enough around it in the beginning.
Like I said, I'm not going to tell you how to raise your child, but I will echo what some others have mentioned. As parents we want to shield our children from all evil. Technology in itself is not evil but many use it for evil. You many not use technology much but I guarantee you use it more than your parents did. Your child will use it more than you do regardless of how you raise them. As a parent it is your responsibility to prepare them for their future.....not yours. |
