Southeast WI | We have been hiring since the mid 90's for mainly the vegetable portion of our farm. The work has changed some as in we have mechanized to make some jobs easier. Some of it cannot be changed like cutting pumpkins and squash and picking off the ground. The amount of young people that are available has changed since people have less kids so therefore the pool to hire kids that can work is smaller. We only get a few kids each year that can actually function and perform duties. It's a numbers game and it's decreased the pool along with the next gen of parents that never taught their kids any responsibilities or work ethic because they dont have it either.
And your lecture saying "we" are bad employers is off-base and unnecessary from my observations of hiring dozens of young people each year and 100's over the past 30+ years. We have a couple good kids this year and none of them are male. And if you think wages dont matter you are clueless. (Now I sound like Coup).
