North Central Indiana | We’ve done unintentional population tests before. A final stand that’s uniform at about 80k yielded right with a final stand of 120k in the same field. Now we put in check strips but plant most good heavy black ground around 115 to 120k. 90% germ means perfect emergence would be 103-108k on that. Still plant sand at 155k. Muck ground we’ll drop 100k and let it ride. In deep muck there’s almost no wrong way to plant. Too deep, too shallow, too wet, too dry rarely changes a thing, if they’re covered they’ll come up. 15 inch rows
All that to say this year we’ve counted anywhere from about 135k to 60k. Obviously follows the population changes. Nearly pulled the trigger on thickening up the 60k but it’s a 9 acre field that usually yields very good so we decided to leave it and see what they do. Vast majority is between 95-100k | |
