Galena IL | You you can feed it the same day you chop it. It’s fully fermented in about three weeks, the pH level then will be about 4.
Humidity in the air has very little effect on it as you have to keep the oxygen out of it.
When you open the pile or the bag, you have to feed about 6 inches a day off of the open area. That’s affected by outside temperature. Most bunker and pile owners have what they call a facer. A rotary machine that cuts off just a few inches but you do it on all the exposed area.
If you’re familiar with wrapped hay rodent and large animal problems would be the same.
Compare haylage to wrapped hay the only difference would be the length.
Another reason for silage is speed of Harvest. In eight hours, my two sons, Daughter and friend and myself chopped and bagged 275 acres of alfalfa. That was over 1000 ton of feed I’ll put in the storage. There’s no way the same number of people could bale and haul in and get wrap that much hay in that amount of time.
In corn that would yield around 200 two 250 bushels an acre we can chop 10 acres an hour or 275 ton per hour. Not every hour but to give you an idea how fast it can be done. | |
