central mich
The most important reason I have nothing to do with FSA or any other programs. I bought an 80 that had some clay tile and surface ditches but had not been farmed for years except for idiots cutting grass off it for years and nothing going back on.
It was flat with a 3-4 small dips but a lot of brush and small trees on that parcel. We have a couple D8 and one with brush rake. Went in and cleared it all. For some reason one of my tenants had got me back into programs after I had not participated.
So I was back in programs for about 8 years and FSA called me and he said he about had a heart attack as we were farming in "wet lands". So went to the county committee and showed them pictures of surface drains and one tile outlet flowing water.
They said I would get a letter from the state. I told them don't even bother as I would never participate in any government program again. So many years have past and I still hate any government program as they are all BS. They will send me a letter once in while and they are tossed.
So it has been many years since I participated in government programs and never will again.
I personally wish the US Dept of Agriculture was eliminated as their programs drive land and equipment prices up. Reminds me of the documentary about the African famers who did not receive government subsidiers because the government could not afford programs and the African farmer could not sell his product in the market because French farmers were heavily subsidized by their government for the same product.
