NWC Ohio | My opinion the pelletized lime will help the current crop if it’s short the available Ca if you get it near the root zone. Bulk spread and worked in or injected bands in the soil both would suffice. In the extremely low areas the injected strips may be better. To get the Ca level of the whole field up long term bulk spreading hi-cal limestone is going to be your cheapest and best bet. Depending on cost and availability in a conventional tillage system 10 tons every couple years to get your levels up I would be ok with. My soils here I’ve done 20+ and then deep tillage to get it into the deeper soil profile. If your primarily no-till, I’d jeep it 4 tons or less and do more years. However, running something over it to get it a couple inches deep at least will be a benefit to getting it deeper into the soil profile and root zone much faster. Wouldn’t have to work it per se, but something to poke holes at least would suffice. | |
