Go out and check coverage after a plane. You'll find spray spots that are literally inches apart. Air does not replace liquid volume. Not even close.
Here is the coverage from a spray test, your not going to find droplets 'inches' apart in the spray pattern. Air is absolutely a carrier of product, and a better penetrate than water at the levels a ground rig runs. I have and do spray corn on my own farm with my ground sprayer, but I haven't seen that it is better than a plane, they both work in my opinion. A plane absolutely gets product down into the canopy farther in what I have seen.
