As long as the tank is below the ports, and the hoses won't trap air bubbles, it will usually work fine. Ideally you'd have the hot water go up and into the block as vertically as possible, the return can loop under the engine if it has to. I'd run the hot to the block, and the return from the water pump. You can run them on one hose if you have to, but they won't tell you THAT.
