In most places the amount you can buy/hold for summer fill.is less than 10% of your total useage. You can only buy what your nurse tanks will hold, which is very little.
Its like selling 10% of a 250 bushel corn crop for $5 and feeling good about it. In actuality, summer fill means very little other than bragging rights, but very little $ saved.
Presently, $660 nh3 is .14 cheaper than $500 urea.
If urea keeps dropping, the NH3 Gestapo will be forced to lower their price to compete. If that happens, for the first time ever, NH3 may be cheaper in the fall than it is for the summer fill.
I've slowly worked up to be able to hold around half of my NH3 needs.
In an ideal world I'd apply half in the fall using the cheaper summer fill and then refill on winter fill for the other half in the spring.
Half can sure help or hurt the average. The last several years it has helped.
One time several years ago (15 ish) we winter filled a couple loads at $265 coming out of the north. Canada or the Dakota's, I can't remember, but that was the only time winter fill was cheaper than summer.
