on corn i was hoping the bugs would break down trash and cobs better after harvest
Much of the bugs breaking residue down starts with actual bugs. Millipedes and other small insects shred and bury the material for breakdown by smaller organisms. Think about things that encourage more insects, such as reducing tillage and insecticide use.
