Too wet early in a plants life will limit root development. Without a robust root system the plant can’t take up as many nutrients it needs to supply the plant for big yields.
We seldom have that problem here but a few years ago we did and when we dried out the plant quickly dried up also.
We also have to watch to not over irrigate early on. Making the plant develop a full root system. Otherwise it gets lazy and won’t send out roots if it don’t have to.
