There is virtually zero effect on yield from the leaf below the ear and down. That's why this isn't done. Your source to sink for grain fill is the upper canopy and ear leaf. If you don't have adequate coverage on those leaves the entire reason fungicide is effective is lost. When people say canopy penetration is important they mean getting coverage on the ear leaf is important, not hitting leaves below that. If you don't get coverage on a leaf it isn't going to get the fungicide moved from the lower part of the plant.
