Subject: Algae in diesel? Dealer recommends fuel tank replacement?

West Central Missouri
I have an aging neighbor. He hires us to do all of his farming, but he still has his equipment. he hasn't placed a new order for diesel in over two and a half years and his little four-cylinder John Deere tractor that we used for PTO to run the loadout auger had problems.
they had the John Deere dealer look at it and they replaced the electric in tank fuel pump which didn't have 50 hours on it since the last replacement. they told him they suspect algae in the diesel and they recommended complete replacement of the tractors fuel tank.

That sounds a little excessive to me. he and his wife look to me for advice and I'm collecting information so that I can advise him well what to do on this. presently I think tank replacement is a little extreme, but I am open to input from anyone with knowledge on this subject matter.
