I suspect there was heavy ketosis but the body was just utilizing the energy.

Excess energy as glucose in the blood is toxic. The body goes to great lengths to reduce it. I would assume excess energy in any form in the blood it not something the body strives for.

The only reason I know of to specifically target high ketones is for therapeutic treatment for certain health conditions such as cancer, dementia, ect.

A state of ketosis is perfectly normal. Babies in the womb and for much of their nursing time are regularly in ketosis. Mother's milk is one of the few foods in nature that come with all three macro nutrients packaged together.
