Thing is, a lot of things are necessary but too much is harmful. Think about it this way: I can prove that air is both necessary and harmful, and it is very easy to prove:

First, hold your breath as long as possible. Fight every urge to breathe long enough, and you will pass out.
Now, breathe as fast as you can. Fight every urge to slow down your breathing. You will hyperventilate and pass out.

In 5 minutes, I just showed you that air is both necessary and harmful. We can do that with pretty much anything. Water is similar. Drink too little and get dehydrated, drink too much you can overwhelm your kidneys and literally drown yourself from the inside.

So, it follows the logic that if you eat 10X as much salt as you 'need' it will likely have adverse effects, but so will breathing 10X the needed air, or drinking 10X the needed water.
