As I recall reading the book, the low salt in the diet push and the recommendation on eating less salt came about because there is about 10% of the population that is sensitive to salt and in that population excess can cause a modest rise in blood pressure. The other 90% hardly any effect. But because of that 10% everybody got the recommendation to lower salt intake, even though there was research showing people living longer with higher intake. In fact risk of death shot up at a higher rate with too little salt than too much. In other words, better to err on the high side than low side.
Also low carb eating requires relatively more salt because carbs cause greater fluid retention. More fluid retained equals more salt retention also.
