Another thing to keep in mind is the cheapening up of the cab and chassis. Say you are looking at 4000 series IH, the 4700/4800/4900 is a much more solid cab than the 4300 that replaced it.
If you aren't hauling anything far with it I'd say go older, probably the peak would be a DTA466 mechanical with air to air intercooler in the early to mid 90s in an air brake equipped 4900 IH.
