South Central ND | This is the answer above and to add to it. You get docked at the elevator for low test weight because it costs the elevator more to ship it. Example. Rail cars aren't cheap and they get filled at roughly 3 semi loads (240k) per rail car. If you come in with low test weight and can only get 2.5 semi loads (200k) into the car and it's full, you're going to be ordering more rail cars.
This is where the debate about test weight begins that you get paid less for less test weight. Have you ever gotten a premium for higher test weight? By rights a guy should if you're getting say 280k in one rail car. Should save the elevator in trucking but they take that as a gift. Just like they take a couple of bushels a day by probing the truck first before weighing. But that's a different discussion. | |
