Actually huge crops typically come from cooler summers which means they don't dry down as well which means they have lower TW (2004,2009).
.
This has no correlation whatsoever.
The reason "cooler summers" MIGHT result in lower test weight is due to better than usual conditions during the blister stage resulting in a physically larger kernel, followed by weather conditions in relative decline resulting in less densely packed starch in the kernel than typical. Once dent stage is reached, the kernel isn't getting larger, but yield is still on the table.
In 2009, the crop was so far behind, there wasn't enough available sunlight for the plant to make enough sugars to fill the blister as densely as typical.
In 2004 our crop was early and had good tw.
