If the insulin-producing beta cells were affected greatly, then about three options exist---insulin--- insulin pumps--ketogenic diet. If doing glucose monitoring, trying something new in small amounts, like the Mediterranean diet, can be monitored.

There is a method to a Aerobic workout, and the above mentioned is not good.

My great grandfather (1857-1956) lived to be 98, and I suspect his diet was not meat/potatoes. Living in KCMO in a better neighborhood (Volker: https://www.volkerkcmo.org/history ), I suspect the food markets provided a variety of foods. But I know nothing of him.
