Georgia | 130-140 deer per square mile here in east central GA. Soybeans have become extinct around here. In the last 10 years they have learned to eat cotton. Bad situation. We have a local seed cleaner in the county over that’s one of the biggest in the state. We have a very good market for rye and oats. Both have been very profitable. Last years market was close to 12$ bushel on rye and 8$ on oats. The problem is becoming what to double crop on those acres so I’m seeing less and less small grain. Deer have not messed with small grains around here other than bedding down in them. I try to grow some of all 3 every year. The biggest challenge in this area is ryegrass control. It will kill yield on oats and make for discounted seed. Square baling the straw adds value as well. | |
