I'm pretty sure the reason it is called unleaded 88 is because most consumers have a very negative perception of ethanol thanks to the oil lobby that has sold them on the idea that it will ruin their engine and kill their mpg.
The stations are hoping the consumer sees unleaded 88 is 15 cents cheaper and just grab that handle without reading the fine print.
The label that should have never been created/marketed is “E85”.
When every gas pump forever has been labeled by Octane content “E85” was and still is a huge marketing mistake.
Honestly, we’d be better off if every E85 pump had E30 in it labeled as “Super unleaded ethanol 95 octane”. And price it accordingly to RBOB and ethanol pricing. Right now E30 should be ~50 cents less than E10.
And get rid of the ridiculous warning labels. Every car on the road can burn E30 without any problems.
