I'm pretty sure the reason it is called unleaded 88 is because most consumers have a very negative perception of ethanol thanks to the oil lobby that has sold them on the idea that it will ruin their engine and kill their mpg.
The stations are hoping the consumer sees unleaded 88 is 15 cents cheaper and just grab that handle without reading the fine print.
