north-central Indiana west of Fulton | Probably not a popular opinion, but I have no tilled soybeans for over 30 years …..first with a Tye drill then the last 14 with a Hiniker air seeder. Both are considered less than desirable by most . Early in the growing season the stand always looks thinner than the tilled fields (we are the only no till nearby) of those that have first rate high dollar planters. As the season develops and by late summer all fields look the same….. our no till fields seem to fill in the voids. Every year I check with my neighbors…. and our yields are never less than their whole farm averages.
I would not update planters simply to add row cleaners…. if you have a good planter. If you were updating anyway ….. the 20” with row cleaners may be desirable. I doubt you will see an increase in yield. You may be able to save a little seed. |
