NW Missouri | My area is the same way. It is known to be big deer country and MO has a little more flexible rules and better season timing than other states (or at least that's how it used to be).
The amount of money spent to deer hunt is mind-boggling. Guys will convince their wife to let them buy a farm as an investment, which is mostly so they can have a deer hunting playground. Then they can deduct their ranger, their mini tractor, and part of their half ton pickup. Then the padlocks, cameras, and $3k deer blinds go up. Realtors and land flippers love these guys. Most realty listings around here are more likely to have trail cam pictures than a soil map.
I used to have a job that included going out to inspect CRP, and a lot of these farms have CRP. I had every legal right to be out there, so I took it as a personal challenge to figure out a way to get onto these farms with a 4 wheeler. Amazing how many people will padlock a gate that can simply be lifted off the hinges at the other end, lol. Or you can drive 100' down the fence and there is a gaping hole. I'd try to wave to the cameras too, or point to my hat, which explained why I was there.
I enjoy deer hunting with my buddies a couple weekends a year on my own land, but it wouldn't bother me one bit if every deer was exterminated tomorrow. They've caused me a lot more vehicle and crop damage than I will ever make up with the enjoyment of hunting them. | |
