SW Ohio | I live in a part of Ohio with a lot of large bucks so deer hunting, especially trophy hunting is a big deal. I know its become pretty competitive to get . Most of my ground is cut-up and surrounded by woods/creeks, and all my ground is rented so i end up between the landowner and the deer hunters. Hasn't been much of an issue until this year, i dropped one small field completely because the landowner himself insisted on having a deer feeder in the first few rows, and when i showed up to plant last spring the feeder was in the field and piles of corn everywhere.
Other day i get a call from a guy that says he has permission to hunt a farm i'm doing on shares with a family member. Roughly 1/3 of the farm is non-tillable old pasture/woods/creek. I gave them permission to drive through the field along a treeline to access where they want to hunt. Now i find out he's got plans to take a small tractor in and seed all kinds of crap in the grass, doesn't want us mowing too much outside of the field borders, is upset about how much we have already bushhogged, putting cameras up all over, setting feeders out that i guess he wants to have out and keep filled year round and some other stuff.
Ultimately i don't think it will affect me too much, unless all the deer are attracted to my fields which i suppose is a problem. But has deer hunting become such a serious hobby that guys are treating it like a they are tenants raising a crop just to shoot a deer? From talking with some other people it seems like this is becoming commonplace and just seems pretty crazy to me. But i suppose i'm not much of a hunter, i'd rather spend my evenings in the barn feeding my steaks and hamburgers. | |
