It's not complicated. I pay with a credit card unless there is a credit card fee, and if there is, I pay cash.

I have received a few thousand dollars back over my life with credit card rewards. Have never paid one penny of credit card interest. Very seldom have paid a credit card fee. I can agree with you that the "cash back" is just getting your own cash back from businesses bumping up the prices due to fees. But if the business isn't charging me more to use the credit card, why wouldn't I go ahead and get the cash back that is offered? If I buy $400 of groceries, I get no discount to pay cash. But I get $20 back from my credit card if I use it. You could also argue that the cash back is just a tiny sliver of the profit that credit card companies are making from those who don't pay their balance off every month.

I do roll my eyes a little when businesses are cashless (because so few people would choose to pay with cash anyway - mostly people over 60) but that's the way things are going. Better get used to it.
