NW IA | I looked into the 1745D extensively on-line and had one ordered. It showed up at the dealer without the net wrap option and that couldn't be corrected for almost a year. (This was during the covid debacle)
I looked at a lot of on-line reviews and I think they are a decent entry level baler. K&H tractors on YouTube has quite a bit of content featuring his pre-D 1745 baler.
It would have fit my small operation nicely, but I moved to a 504R, Premium version, VerMeer because the dealer had access to one. I am very happy to have the heavier baler because it allows me to bale corn stalks more effectively. The Massey dealer said the 1745D could do it, but I'd have to take it easy.
The VerMeer has a 60 inch wide cam-less pickup. The wide pickup does help me often with wider windrows.
If you're making dry hay on a smaller scale it looks like a good option. My 504R is a bit over-kill, but I'm glad I went that way. If I remember correctly it was north of 10K more $$ though.
If bale size is a concern, it all depends on your circumstances. Some of my hay customers with small livestock numbers can't handle 1500 lb bales with compact tractors, small skidders, etc. They also don't want that much hay exposed to the elements for as long as it would take for their critters to eat it.
I have sold rounds to a few larger operations and they hate handling more bales to feed cattle, but they do say that the 4X5s waste less because they don't fill hay rings to the outside edge, and the cows reach in further to get the hay. | |
