Thumb of Michigan | Average or a little below yields here, BUT harvest was earlier this year. We got into some unusual weather pattern, where we didn't have any measurable rain for 12 days straight. I normally start cutting 1st cutting around May 27-28 and finish by June 15th. Last year I finished June 21st, this for the first time ever, I finished cutting June 3rd. I could've been done two days earlier IF I could have did all the other stuff too (unload, rake, ted, bale, on top of cutting). I did cut 5 out of 7 days.
10-12 days of earlier cutting, plus the heat we're getting now would've pushed the yields for certain. We had 9 days straight with absolutely no rain. The first day I cut, we got a few small drops of rain that evening, if you were not outside you wouldn't have known, is how light it was.
Definitely a year for the record books. I'd say almost 100% of 1st cutting is in the books around HERE by last Friday. There are a few folks that go for yield and don't cut until July/August, so they can get 1st & 2nd cutting at same time, while bragging about how much hay they got. | |
