eastern sd | I have a 9" rear axle in a 77 f150 that I am working on. We rebuilt the whole thing with a limited slip carier and changed to 3.73 gears, in the process we installed a new pinion pilot bearing. When we drove the pilot bearing in it bottomed but we could only see half the groove, we could not find the retainer clip in the kit and came to the conlcusion that it was a differnt style bearing that didnt need the clip. We put the whole thing together and have some miles on it but I decided I didnt like not having the clip in so I pulled the pinion housing back out. On inspection the groove is now completely covered indicating the bearing may have walked out some. I tired as hard as I could to drive the bearing back in and expose the groove to no avail. At this point the right thing to do is pull the bearing out (will probalby wreck it and have to get a new one $35) and see whats going on. Can anybody thats worked on these confirm this or give any advice? Were there ever pilot bearings that didnt need retainers? I know there is a .650" deep bearing and a .8XX deep beaing, based on my measusrement this is the .650" bearing. It is a factory housing. | |
