Subject: identify.. seed? Fungus? egg?

I farm around 20 different fields ranging from 10-100 acres. One of my fields is covered in these little white donut/bowl shaped white hard things. Has been for years. Are they a seed of some kind? a fungus or something growing? Something spread 20+ years ago before I was involved and paying attention? The fields had these things all over it for as long as I can remember.

They're smaller than a soybean and harder. You can just barely cut some with a fingernail, but most are too hard to damage with a nail.
You don't really see them underground, only on the surface. Entire field is covered in them.
